Our ABE programs have been able to help Beginning ABE students by:
-using an appropriate curriculum
-providing instructional access to lower level students who aren't allowed
in other centers
-providing "hands on" skills and functional reading skills that a student can
feel successful with
-having tutor training provided for tutors to give strategies for working with
struggling students
-developing communication skills, i.e. email and internet
-changing thinking and decision making skills
-teaching values and ethics
-offering full time instruction
-providing packets of refresher materials for independent learning
-encouraging a positive attitude and ownership of their learning
