There's a wonderful new website created by Rochester ABE with videos of mock interviews http://www.mnabe.org/. This is an excellent resource for teaching interview skills for ESL students and for native speakers. Check out the Do's and Don'ts section. I especially like the Don'ts. Very funny acting on the part of the students. They were coached by a professional employment interviewer, the same woman who is the interviewer in the films and does the introductions.

Great videos.

What are other websites you find helpful in teaching Workforce English or other employment skills?

The WILMA (Workforce Initiative for a Leadership and Mentoring Alliance) project has used the materials from the "Tennessee ESOL in the Workplace" training manual.  This is a free down-loadable resource from the University of Tennessee's Center for Literacy Studies:  http://www.cls.utk.edu/esol_workplace.html

This manual was developed by the Center for Literacy Studies in cooperation with the Tennessee Labor and Workforce Development Office of Adult Education to prepare both program supervisors and instructional staff to launch successful workplace initiatives in business and industries. This manual has a wealth of information which includes:

  1. Knowing and presenting your adult education ESOL programs to business and industry.
  2. Knowing your community's needs and understanding the workplace.
  3. Designing a plan to deliver and sustain educational services to the workforce.
  4. Knowing your results by evaluating and monitoring progress.

I love the mnabe website!  Thanks for suggesting it.

When I tried to access the www.mnabe.org web site I got the following message:

"Directory Listing Denied

This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed."

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Do you have any suggestions for how I can successfully access the site?

Hi Pearl,

I'm having trouble accessing the page at all ("Internet Explorer cannot display the page").  I expect the page is either a) down or b) moved to another web address.

It hasn't been that long since I last accessed the site, so this is a new problem.  I'll check into it and get back to you!

Susan

Update:

The web address has indeed changed.  You can now access these materials at:  http://www.rochesterabe.org/ !

Does this web site still exist? When I clicked on the link, I received this message: "Bad Request (Invalid Host name)"

Very recently, the owner of the site chose not to renew his registration of the domain name and took the site down, I think for financial reasons (he wasn't being supported in keeping it up). sad

However, the content is still available on DVD. Contact Jason Brazier at jbrazier@theMLC.org and request a copy of the "You're Hired!" DVD and he can send one to you free of charge.
