This was such a helpful course because I think we see so many students in ABE with either depression or anxiety.  Many of the native speakers have had negative experiences in their childhood--especially in school where they have often struggled and failed.  Failure after failure results in the feeling of hopelessness and low self worth. The decision to try again is a big one and as a teacher, I  have the privilege and responsibility to help these students find ways to be successful.  It is so amazing to see how passing their first GED practice test is just the encouragement they need to keep going! This is often the first step to their having success in this important area of their lives.

I wholeheartedly agree with you.  It is very difficult for many of our students to come back.  I am excited about using some of the strategies delineated to facilitate the learning in one of my students in particular who demonstrates many of symptoms highlighted for depression...  Wow!  To have studied this sooner!  Can't wait to implement--this course will definitely help me be more sensitive to her issues and needs.
