What are your favorite materials for literacy-level ESL learners?

We've recently had a large influx of students with higher oral English skills, but low/no literacy skills. Because they already have a strong vocabulary in English, their literacy needs are similar to that of a native English speaker learning to read for the first time. We've had great success with these students by using early phonics readers called Bob books. We have sets #1-5. Our students have made great progress working with these, often one on one with a volunteer in the classroom.

Though you can find them at Amazon, I recommend buying them from a locally owned bookstore. They can order them for you if you have the ISBN (which you can find on Amazon). I ordered mine through The Valley Bookseller in Stillwater, 651-430-3385. They give a 20% discount to school orders.

Natasha, those sound like great texts.  Have you any experience using the "Sam and Pat" series from Heinle?  It sounds like it might be similar to the "Bob books".  Here's the link to Heinle's series info:
